About Kemence

Originating from the vast area between the black sea and Persia this instrument comes in several forms, sizes and sounds. Mediterranean and Eurasian mixed with Persian and Middle Eastern musical heritages come together in the sound and deep musical ethnic presence of these instruments.

Sonokinetic decided to capture the enchanting sound of the classical Kemençe and sample this instrument in a quality package. This instrument oozes musical heritage. A supremely performed and recorded cinematic approach of multiple ethnic musical styles. The instrument is a perfect match with the styles and flavours of other Sonokinetic ethnical sampled instrument and vocals.

The classical Kemençe is a pear shaped 40cm in height, bowed string instrument that has a distinctive sound to it. It’s recognized immediately especially when set in a microtonal setting.

This Kemençe sample library is based on musical structures similar to the ones found in other Ethnic sampled instruments by Sonokinetic, making this a valuable addition to and perfect match for your Sonokinetic sampling products. Based on more than 10 different styles these performances are divided in traditionals and improvisations. Where the traditionals focus more on melodies within a particularly Middle Eastern tone scale, improvisations use this tone material focus on a more ‘western cinematical’ melodic approach.

This instrument ships with an intelligent legato scripted instrument, giving you an opportunity to play this instrument in real time and create your own melody lines. Complete with transition notes and bowed sustains.

Recorded at Sonokinetic Studios in Istanbul with our renowned sound team and Kemençe master Mahinur Sezener, we’re very proud to release this unique instrument. We hope it will give you as much inspiration as it gave us and will suit your scoring template with elegance.

Sticking to our award-winning multi sampling / performance capturing concepts and teaming up with the world’s greatest musicians, recording artists, programmers, designers and scripters we are proud to present to you:

The Interface

The main UI for Kemençe consists of several controls including Legato / Phrase selection, Impulse Response (reverb) control, Tempo Sync, Intelligent Time Machine and root BPM (tempo) selectors.

Phrases and Legato

Choose either performance-sampled Phrases that are divided in two sub groups (Improvisations & Traditionals) or playable Legato by clicking either button.

Phrases & Performances

Kemençe has up to 10 different styles included. Each style has been selected to fix a specific key and tempo. Slower tempo are set in Kurdi, where Hicaz is performed in mid tempo bpm. For the faster tempi Kemençe uses a selection of tempi in styles of Rast and Nihavend.

Phrase Indicator

We found it particularly intuitive, when composing to see what length a phrase would be. Since not all phrases are cut out with computer science in mind, they are more focused on musical and artistic expression, there’s a lot of variety in length and duration of a phrase. Hence the “Phrase Indicator” that shows you the remaining length by steadily following the phrase progression, filling the sphere with a transparent ‘hour glass’ like substance.

Mic positioning

For each articulation available in this instrument there are three mic positions available.

Mono: close mic recorded version
Stereo: overhead placed stereo version with more ambience.
Mixed: a close and overhead mixed stereo channel. Preconfigured mixed version.

By sliding the slider or by clicking on the symbols above the slide, the position is changed.

Auto Ending

These trigger random endings for your phrases. When activated it will play an ending to your phrase
in the corresponding key

Playing Kemençe

Legato

Kemençe has a 1,5 octave keyrange for the legato instrument. Sustains have a bow looping. This is activated and deactivated with the same tempo sync controls as mentioned above. All samples loop indefinitely.

Legato transitions will trigger automatically as long as the second note is played before the first is released. Trills can also be played easily by holding one note whilst repeatedly triggering another. All legato patches are velocity sensitive to allow a full range of expression. Blue keys mark the position of the playable zones in the legato instrument. The extra blue keyswitch on C1 switches between mezzo forte legato and forte legatos.

Phrases

With the performance sampled phrases, Kemençe provides red colored key switches from A0 to G#1 which will become yellow when selected:

Mapping Improvisations:

Mapping Traditionals: (the blue/cyan keyswitch switches between range extensions)

Harmonic Key Display

Use the red keyswitches to set the pitch of the phrases then use the upper white keys to trigger them. The Key is displayed in the top right corner of the instrument. This harmonic key displayer changes according to the harmonic key that is selected by the red key switches on your keyboard. Phrases will change pitch, depending on the keyswitch selected.

The Tempo Sync and ITM buttons explained above will ensure that the phrases sync to your host tempo. Bear in mind some phrases do not begin on bar 1 but half a beat beforehand.
